Rock Band Unplugged -- review
A handheld version of a popular, plastic-heavy music game doesn’t need to be difficult.  Just ditch the instruments!  For Guitar Hero: On Tour, Activision created an unnecessary and obstructive dongle to affix on the DS, making that game out to be more of a gimmick than anything.  For Rock Band Unplugged, Harmonix thankfully didn’t feel the need to ship you a drum kit eleven times the size of...

I still don’t know what to think about that Patrick Stump EP. Breaking Fall Out Boy into separate units excited me.  By the time Folie a Deux came around, FOB had great vocals that mixed styles just enough to create something refreshing.  It was easy pop music, but it was superb easy pop music. The Michael Jackson inspiration in Truant Wave is obvious, but this time it feels all too busy....

Is the iPhone killing the 3DS?!?!?!?!?!!??!?!?!
No.  Straight up, the answer is no.  Stop arguing about it. After the recent 3DS price drop from $250 to $170, speculation has consumed most gamers as to why.  The answer is simple, but they want it to be complex.  They have an iPhone, like the iPhone, and want to support the iPhone, so they jump to the conclusion that it was Apple who has been getting in Nintendo’s way.  After all, smart...

There should be a word for that.
There should be a word for that specific case.  I remember being a young man and writing the exact same way, including a “therefore” in every paragraph. I was the exemplary student when it came to English.  Teachers would give me big vocabulary words and I would return the next day with both the spellings memorized and their proper uses.  While everyone else was writing “u r...

I bought Persona 4 a while ago. I should really play Persona 4.  (Can’t decide if I should watch Giant Bomb’s Endurance Run before or afterwards!)

GEORGE LUCAS? MORE LIKE GEORGE LUC”ASS” WAY TO RAPE MY CHILDHOOD!!! Being able to predict that kind of response doesn’t make me impressive, it makes other commenters (on every forum on all the internet) shallow and unremarkable. Indy 4 has similar problems to the Star Wars prequels and it has a similar problem with its critical response. Over the years people have decided to...

Grand Theft Auto IV is back in my 360.  My reading on the Statue of Happiness’ secret (which I have yet to be able to do) gave me a great hankering to revisit it.  This game is one of the greatest in such particular ways.  Every time I consider it my favorite of its year I remember five above it, which only emphasizes how great the others must be. GTA4 grips me in ways the series’...

Theoretically, politics are in place to help people.  The United States’ warped style of a republic doesn’t help anyone.  I think the idea is clear. You know what doesn’t help?  Writing angry tweets.  Calling your congressman.  Stomping your feet, or yelling, or picking a team, or choosing a side.  Shooting someone with a gun doesn’t help, nor does breaking a door with a...

Money in the Bank 2011 -- Review
Good professional wrestling is easy.  You mix the altruism of a child’s cartoon and the reality of being kicked in the face.  It’s easy, or at least it should be.  There needn’t be any “worked shoots” or random and inconsequential alignment changes.  That’s what Vince Russo doesn’t understand.  Wrestling is no more than a simple, earnest fable.  To clog it full of sub-soap opera mannerisms does...

gamejournos: Writes a reader who emailed me this morning, “I knew Kotaku would somehow try to tie the Oslo bombings to video games. I dreaded it, even as I accepted its inevitability. But I just hoped it would take them more than 24 hours.” This needs to be reblogged.  In 1999 (when I was…10?) I bought an issue of GamePro for no other reason than it said “Game” on it, and I...

Broken Flowers -- Review
Did you know that Bill Murray is the greatest actor in the history of cinema?  It’s true!  It’s a scientific fact I cannot scientifically prove.  His mere presence is a welcome addition to any film.  There should be no hero worship of the man, but he has a remarkable ability to drag any film through the mud and up onto some kind of pedestal.  Broken Flowers could have easily been a mediocre or...

You know, I want to be a writer.  That’s exposing one’s self.  That means hard work, and it means keep going. I want to keep writing stories, reviews, thoughts.  I don’t want to change my name.  One girl with a sea of insecurities and a field of selective memories doesn’t hold a candle to my willpower.  She didn’t extinguish the flame, she rolled a boulder in front...

Super 8 -- Review
It feels good to say “family-friendly” in a certain context again.  I like how I’m able to say “It’s fun for all ages!” without the stigma that twenty years of garbage has brought us.  Super 8 isn’t full of Billy West getting snubbed by Will Smith for voiceover work or subtle racist undertones or random musical numbers to recreate a popular rap song from years before the movie’s release.  That’s...
